Getting to Certification
A Certificate of Qualification is the post-secondary credential issued by the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency upon successful completion of all certification requirements. Certification in a skilled trade is achieved when an individual demonstrates a minimum of 70% competency in a range of skills that define the full scope of the trade. A certified tradesperson is able to work independently in a safe, productive and respectful manner. There are three ways to achieve trade certification in Nova Scotia: direct entry; pre-apprenticeship and trade qualification.
Direct Entry
Direct entry into apprenticeship can occur when an individual seeks employment with a trades employer and that employer agrees to register and train them as an apprentice. Little to no trade experience is required and a youth apprentice or high school graduate can enter apprenticeship directly without first completing a pre-apprenticeship program. Apprentices who complete all requirements of their program and pass the certification exam with a 70% mark or above will receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certification of Qualification.
Pre-apprenticeship
Pre-apprenticeship is an option for high school graduates or career changers who want to learn more about the trade before going to work. In this case, graduates of trades pre-apprenticeship programs must still find an employer upon graduation; however, will receive advanced standing from the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency towards in their apprenticeship program. Many pre-apprenticeship programs are offered through the Nova Scotia Community College. Apprentices who complete all requirements of their program and pass the certification exam with a 70% mark or above will receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certification of Qualification.
Trade Qualification
Trade qualification is an option for trades practitioners who have significant experience working in a trade and can demonstrate they have the skills and work experience necessary to meet the standards set for a certified skilled tradesperson in Nova Scotia. Individuals interested in becoming a trade qualifier will need to apply through the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency. An Industry Training Consultant will assist with this process. If approved to challenge for certification, the individual will write the certification exam and pass with a mark of 70% or above in order to receive a Certification of Qualification.
Red Seal Endorsement
The Red Seal Endorsement is an endorsement affixed to a provincial/territorial Certificate of Qualification in a Red Seal trade and is recognized throughout Canada. Red Seal trades are common across Canada and have national standards. The endorsement signifies that these national standards have been met or exceeded.
