Analyze client's hair and scalp; style, such as with braids, locs and twists; and incorporate extensions, weaves, hairpieces and wigs. Services may also include incidental cutting, straightening, curling and hair drying. Natural hair care services does not include the use of chemicals.
Individuals and salons practicing the Black Beauty Culture Hair Innovator trade are not subject to the Cosmetology Act or regulation by the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia.
The Cosmetology Act only applies to individuals practicing this trade if they are also engaged in any of the following:
- practicing cosmetology as defined in the Cosmetology Act,
- engaging in the instruction of cosmetology in a school,
- operating a school providing occupational training in cosmetology, or
- operating a cosmetology salon/employing an individual practicing cosmetology as defined in the Cosmetology Act in their salon.
In these circumstances, the salon, school, and cosmetologist must, at all times, abide with the licensing requirements of the Cosmetology Act.
